An Afternoon in the Park, Paris France
Some of the best moments in my travels aren’t in museums, historic buildings, or your typical tourist traps. Some of the best moments are in spots that you could find at home; ones you wouldn’t give a second thought.
It’s our second day in Paris and my school group and I have been given a few hours to go off on our own. My closest friends and I decide to spend the afternoon in the Parc de Choisy, a quiet park lined with cube head trees.
We get crepes at a modest coffee shack that’s tucked away beneath the shade of the trees. It looks like it’s always been there. The thin pastries provide the perfect sweetness to this quiet, warm afternoon.
Some of the younger locals are playing a friendly game of Petanque, while the older ones are engaging in games of checkers and chess. The park feels charmingly lived-in, like an immovable respite that’s always there to escape to.
After we eat our crepes, my friends and I split up into even smaller groups and pairs. My childhood friend and I find a seat on an empty park bench and watch the afternoon go by.
We talk about the absurd amount of pigeons that seem to plague this city. Somehow we’re able to draw out that topic for an hour or so. Is there anything interesting about pigeons? No. But this conversation is just filler, as we bask the serenity of the Parc de Choisy.
