Bruges Belgium A Town Frozen in Time
My school group and I have now reached the middle of our 10-day Europe trip. We’re on our way to Amsterdam, but we’re spending the afternoon in Bruges, Belgium. I’m not familiar with this town in the slightest. In fact, I’ve never heard of it.
We get off the tour bus in a dry, dusty parking lot. The only thing in sight is a rest stop. We all use the facilities and stand around in confusion. I almost suspect we’re getting back on the bus.
What we hadn’t seen was that the rest stop had been obstructing a large, arching bridge that hangs above a small creek. The bridge is so steep that we can’t see the other side.
We cross over, and what waits on the other side is a vibrant field of flowers. Bright blues, reds, yellows, and pinks, all scattered in a sea of green. I feel like we’ve crossed into Narnia.
I turn to look back at the bridge, and the dusty lot and rest stop are out of sight and out of mind. We have officially arrived in Bruges.
As we walk into town, the first thing I notice is how old everything looks. The cobblestone roads and the horse-drawn carriages that ride noisily on top of them beckon to a simpler time.
We weave through mazes of old townhouses and hole-in-the-wall shops. When we’re given permission to break off on our own, my friends and I find a small bakery where we order thick, fluffy waffles drizzled in chocolate. When in Belgium, right?
Enjoying our decadent treats on a park bench, we watch the clouds go by, possibly the only thing in this town that obeys the laws of time.
Never have I felt so serene, so at peace. I wish I could stay in this quiet town forever. But when it’s time to head back to the bus, I look back over the bridge, and like the children who found their wonderland in a wardrobe, I know I’ll return one day.
We’ve crossed into Narnia
